What to prepare
- Your overseas phone number, able to receive verification messages
- Your passport and the name used by your bank
- An eligible international card and access to its banking app
- A physical card and some RMB cash for a failed connection or payment
Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before flying
Download the genuine app from your device’s app store and sign in with your phone number. In Alipay, look for the option to add a bank card. In WeChat, open Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards. Menus may change with the app version.
Follow the in-app instructions to add an eligible card and complete any identity or bank verification requested. An installed app is not the same as a ready payment account: resolve sign-in and verification issues while you still have a reliable connection.
- Check the publisher before installing; do not install an APK sent by a stranger.
- Keep your home number available for bank verification, with roaming charges understood.
- Read the fees and payment limits shown in the app and by your bank.

Understand the two QR payment flows
At checkout, a merchant may ask you to scan their QR code, or may scan a payment code displayed in your app. Ask which flow they use rather than scanning every code on the counter.
When entering an amount yourself, confirm the merchant and total before authorizing. Wait for the transaction result and check your history before retrying a payment that appears stuck. Never share a live payment code in a screenshot.
Keep cash and a physical card within reach
A displayed card-network logo is a useful sign of card acceptance, but check before ordering. Carry small RMB notes for places where your preferred digital method fails. A backup should not depend on the same phone battery or data connection as your main method.

If your overseas card is declined
Check the error in the payment app and the issuing bank’s app. A bank security check, an unsupported transaction or a connection problem can require different fixes. Use the support channel inside the app or contact your bank; do not give card details or one-time codes to unofficial helpers.
Before trying another method, confirm whether the first payment completed. Save the transaction reference if you need support or a refund.

If something goes wrong
- Ask whether the merchant accepts your physical card or RMB cash.
- Try another already-verified payment method only after checking the first transaction status.
- For an app or card issue, use the official app support and your bank; a stranger cannot safely “verify” your account.
Important boundaries
- Card support, fees and limits change. The in-app notice and issuing bank govern your transaction.
- Linking a card does not guarantee that every transfer, merchant or mini-program supports it.
- This is a setup guide, not financial advice or a guarantee of acceptance.
Common questions
Do I need a Chinese bank account?
Eligible international cards can be linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay. Some account functions may still have additional requirements; check the function you need inside the app.
Should I bring cash?
Yes. A small cash reserve and physical card give you options when a phone, network or digital payment fails.
