Your first hour

Connect. Pay. Save your hotel address in Chinese.

01

Before you fly

Ten minutes now saves an hour at arrivals.

Visitor reports repeatedly point to the same avoidable problems: setting up payment after landing, arriving without usable data, and not having a destination written in Chinese.

Entry rules change.

Confirm visa or visa-free eligibility against your passport, route and travel dates on the official NIA site shortly before departure.

The field guide

Know what to do next.

Fast instructions, realistic fallbacks, and the exact official service to use when plans go sideways.

01 · Payments

Make QR your default. Keep two backups.

Alipay and WeChat Pay support registration with overseas phone numbers and binding of major international cards. Your issuing bank still needs to approve the connection.

STEP 1

Install

Download Alipay or WeChat before departure.

STEP 2

Verify

Use your passport details exactly as shown.

STEP 3

Bind

Add an international card and confirm with your bank.

Fallback plan: carry a physical bank card and some small RMB notes. Cash is an official payment option, but small vendors may have limited change.

A high-speed train arriving at a station in China

Rail rule #1

The passport is your train ticket ID.

Use the same name and passport number when booking, and carry the original document to the station.

02 · Transport

One country, three simple moves.

Between cities

Book on 12306 English

Complete identity verification, book with your passport, and use the original document at the gate.

Around the city

Metro first

Buy a single-journey ticket or activate the city transport QR code in Alipay where supported.

Door to door

Use DiDi in English

The Greater China app supports overseas phone numbers and international cards. Confirm the pickup pin before booking.

Map tip: save the Chinese place name. Apple Maps on iPhone or Amap usually has better local place data than map services that are not maintained for mainland China.

03 · Connect & communicate

Your phone is the bridge.

Choose data before arrival

Arrange international roaming or a travel eSIM, or visit a China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom outlet with your passport for a local SIM.

Download an offline language pack

Camera translation is especially useful for menus, signs and ticket machines. Service access can differ by network.

Screenshot the Chinese address

Show the text rather than relying on an English hotel or attraction name.

Stay legal, stay easy

Registration is part of check-in.

Hotels register foreign guests when you present your passport. If you stay in a private home or other non-hotel accommodation, you or your host must complete accommodation registration within 24 hours.

From March 2026

The NIA provides online channels for eligible non-hotel accommodation registration, alongside local public-security offices.

Good to know

Small details that prevent big detours.

China is highly convenient once your phone, identity and payment tools are aligned. Keep these practical constraints in mind.

Visa-free is not one rule

Eligibility depends on nationality, purpose, route and stay length. Check NIA, not a social post.

Names must match

Train and flight bookings should match the passport used for travel, including name order where required.

Card acceptance varies

Large hotels and attractions are more likely to accept international cards than neighborhood businesses.

Keep the original passport

Rail, hotels and some attractions may need it for identity checks. Store it securely and carry a copy separately.

Common questions

Quick answers before takeoff.

Both are official payment options, but neither is as consistently convenient as mobile payment at small merchants. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay and keep cash plus a physical card as backups.
